The Momentum Review

The Momentum Review (TMR) is one of the affiliates of Momentum Magazine that is committed to showcasing the works of our contributors from all around the world rather than those from Momentum Magazine team. The published issues of TMR will only appear on our website under the “The Momentum Review” category and is separate from the triannual literary magazine published by the Momentum Magazine team.

TMR is a bimonthly (six issues every year) publication. We will be selecting the top 15 written submissions to go under The Momentum Review, and the top three written submissions among the last 30 pieces to go on the contributor section of our magazine. With regards to art and photography submissions, we will be selecting the top 5 art submissions and top 5 photography submissions to go under The Momentum Review. If we choose to feature your piece on the magazine, we will contact you accordingly.

You will hear from us within a week after the said deadline whether or not we have accepted your piece. Should you not hear back after the week, feel free to contact farida@ourmomentum.org (Farida Amr, Co-Director of Writing) or thanh@ourmomentum.org (Thanh Le, Co-Creative Director) for inquiries about your submissions.

SUBMISSION GUIDELINES

We are currently accepting submissions for The Momentum Review Part I. The submission window for this issue opened on August 27th and will close after we have received 15 written pieces and 5 artworks (rolling submissions). We welcome any form of art, photography, and writing, particularly those with a focus on the theme of “Momentum.” The theme is very open to interpretation, so be creative!

As we want our works to be accessible to a wide audience, we are only accept works written in English. Should you want to submit works in other languages, you must include an English translation along with the language of your choice; however, I’m sure we all know that the meanings of some words get lost in translation.

We accept works that you have previously written and published on your personal social media. If a piece published in Momentum is subsequently published in another magazine, we ask that you briefly mention that your piece previously appeared in The Momentum Review.

Should your pieces be accepted, either Farida or Thanh will ask you through email to send us a 2-5 sentence third person bio, along with any links to personal websites (optional), and an author photo (optional). Artists can also send in the dimensions and materials of works, in addition to the titles of their works.

For any questions or concerns, see the points of contact listed below. It is also required to join our community Discord to be updated with our initiatives and submission announcements and/or updates. You can do so via this link: https://discord.gg/VtD2y5C.

SUBMISSION FORMATS

WRITTEN PIECES: Please submit your pieces through Google Docs and share them with farida@ourmomentum.org. Please name your document: “Momentum Contributor Submission [your first and last name] Part [number].”

Please keep in mind that while 15 submissions will be accepted for each Review Part, (e.g. The Momentum Review Part I), the top three written submissions among the last 30 pieces will be featured in our Contributors Section in the coming magazine issue (as to account for the bimonthly nature of TMR).

ART/PHOTOGRAPHY: We recommend using PNGs, sent through email or shared with thanh@ourmomentum.org through a Google Drive folder. Please name your files “Momentum Contributor Submission [your first and last name] Part [number].” We accept previously published artworks and images that are already available via other websites and/or exhibitions.

SUBMISSION PROCESSES

WRITTEN PIECES: We are accepting submissions for:

  1. Fictional Prose – Up to three pieces at a time, no more than 2000 words in total.
  2. Poetry – Up to five poems per submission, no more than 1,500 words in total. If you submit, for instance, three poems for an issue, all of those will be under a collection of poems. We will not be choosing between poems in your submission.
  3. Op-eds – One submission per issue, no more than 2000 words per piece. Our preferred piece types for this issue are personal or explanatory narratives, commentary, and reflections, but all submissions are welcome. A friendly reminder that we are trying to stay apolitical but aware, so we would be less inclined to accept political commentary.

If your piece is accepted, you will be notified via email and can begin working on your piece. We will review your piece within two days of submission, so submit it ASAP. If you wish to submit multiple pieces (e.g. three poems), keep them all under one document. If you wish to submit Multimedia Pieces (i.e. songwriting, screenplays, animated PSAs, etc.), please email farida@ourmomentum.org for more details.

ART/PHOTOGRAPHY: Send your pieces to thanh@ourmomentum.org.  You can submit digital art or traditional art. One visual art portfolio can have up to 5 pieces. We will let you know if your piece has been accepted.

PLAGIARISM POLICY

The art and writing you submit to TMR must be your own. Every work submitted is vetted through a rigorous process, and art theft and plagiarism are things we do not and will never condone. Should you commit any form of plagiarism, you will be notified through email along with evidence, and you will be added to Momentum’s blacklist. We will see to it to never accept submissions from you again. This is a serious issue, and one we do not take lightly.

INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY (CREATOR) POLICY

Upon acceptance, Momentum Magazine will revert all rights to the respective author/artist. If your work is published in another magazine or journal, we would really appreciate it if you briefly mention that your piece has been previously published in Momentum Magazine’s Contributor Section The Momentum Review. Upon acceptance, you will also be asked to provide a short bio of yourself for our social media pages (picture optional).

ETHICS POLICY

As a diverse, international publication, we welcome writers of all backgrounds, nationalities, ethnicities, races, sexualities, and genders. With that being said, we will not tolerate any form of discrimination, hate-speech, or harassment, and will be immediately rejecting artworks or written pieces that express these qualities.

Disclaimer: The works presented on The Momentum Review do not reflect the views of Momentum Magazine but rather those espoused by our contributors.
